Kohli Retires From T20Is, Rohit To Follow Suit After T20 World Cup Win?

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli - two champion cricketers which have been synonymous with Indian cricket for the last two decades - faced a strong speculation over their future in the shortest format even before the T20 World Cup 2024 began. After the final, Virat Kohli announced officially that he is retiring from the format as it was time for the next generation to take over. Now, the focus is on Rohit Sharma.  Rohit Sharma was part of the Indian cricket team which won the 2007 T20 World Cup. That way, the 2024 T20 World Cup is sort of 'coming full circle' for him.  The big question is what next for Rohit Sharma? Just to jog the readers' minds, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli went on an extended 'break' in T20Is after the T20 World Cup 2022. The buzz was that Hardik Pandya would take over the captaincy in the shortest format and he was the designated skipper in few of the series too. But as the year drew to a close, injury and lean patch saw Pandya slowly get

Coach Dravid's Team India Journey Culminates With T20 World Cup Title

When Rahul Dravid coached India to an U-19 World Cup win in 2018 - guiding the likes of Shubman Gill and Arshdeep Singh - it seemed like it was a matter of time till he became the Head Coach of the senior India Men's cricket team. And so it proved to be. Now, as the curtains are drawn on the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid's two-and-a-half-year-long tenure comes to a close. Will he, nay should he, be remembered fondly for guiding India in a transitional phase despite the burning hunger for a major title? Much like his predecessor Ravi Shastri , Rahul Dravid has possessed a dominant Indian team with very little ICC silverware to show for it. But should it define his legacy? The undisputed best team in the world By all stats and figures - and performances - Rahul Dravid's Team India has been the best team in the world. Team India have won 41 out of 56 ODIs, 48 out of 69 T20Is, and lost just one Test series, winning five and drawing two. In all formats, India's form

"Bomb In There?" Comment By Passenger Delays Kolkata-Pune Flight

A passing remark by a passenger led to a bomb scare at the Kolkata airport on Friday, delaying a flight to Pune by a few hours, an official said. The incident happened around 12 pm when the check-in process was on for the Kolkata to Pune via Bhubaneswar flight of a private airline, he said. A passenger displeased with security personnel thoroughly checking his bag had remarked, "Is there a bomb in there?" an Airports Authority of India (AAI) spokesperson said. This led to the scare, following which the security personnel carried out a thorough search across all passenger baggage and the aircraft after emptying it as some passengers had already boarded, he said. After going through all necessary security protocols nothing was found, he added. The passenger's remark was the root of what happened, the spokesperson said, noting that the aircraft finally took off for its destination at 5.30 pm. The Kolkata airport had received two hoax bomb threats in April.  (Except fo

Sharing a video of police officers wiping the ink off the plaque outside his residence, the MP wrote: "Some "unknown miscreants" vandalised my house with black ink today. On Sam Pitroda's Comeback, What PM Modi Had Told NDTV

Congress's Sam Pitroda -- who stepped down from the post of its overseas unit chief in the run-up to the general election -- is back in the saddle again. That he would be reinstated, was said by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an interview to NDTV. "I sometimes think the party (the Congress), in a well-planned way, does this. I don't think they (the members) do this on their own. Then they are kept out of the party for a  few days. Then they come back in the mainstream again," PM Modi had said in May. "This is what they did with their guru in America. He has resigned. Now he will be brought back again after a while... It is their well-considered strategy to create confusion in the country, change the atmosphere, create new issues, compel their opponents to react on these issues," he had told NDTV. Sam Pitroda had stepped down from the post after his two consecutive statements sparked huge controversies. In an exclusive interview with The Statesman in ear

Eknath Shinde Takes A Swipe At Uddhav Thackeray Over 'Farewell' Remark

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday took a swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray for his statement that the monsoon session beginning June 27 will be the farewell session of the MahaYuti government. "Shouldn't he (Uddhav Thackeray) be in the House to give a farewell? Or will he say goodbye from a Facebook Live? The people will decide whether to bid a farewell," Shinde said, asserting that those sitting in the government are connected to the people and have done a slew of works for their betterment. The obvious reference was Uddhav Thackeray's regular use of Facebook Live during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government's tenure, instead of coming to the Mantralaya. Shinde, who chaired the state Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, also criticised the opposition for its move to boycott the customary tea meeting convened by him on the eve of the monsoon session. "This is the last session of the present state Assembly. So we thought that the oppo

Congress-Trinamool Deadlock Over Speaker Election Continues

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerje's Trinamool Congress has remained the shaky spot in the united Opposition front over the election of the Speaker. The party, which started the day with the complaint that they were not consulted about fielding a candidate, ended it by expressing its disapproval of the Congress decision and keeping the alliance on tenterhooks over its support to K Suresh. At a meeting of the INDIA bloc at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's house on Tuesday evening, Trinamool expressed its reservation about the decision to go for a contest, sources said. On whether it would support K Suresh against the BJP candidate Om Birla, the party said they would convey their decision by 9 am today. Sources said the party had argued that some of their members could not take oath and some Opposition MPs are in jail. So a contest at this point will only put then NDA strength on display.   The Congress's eleventh-hour snap decision to field Mr Suresh and force

How Can Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh Qualify For T20 WC Semi-finals

The T20 World Cup semi-final race in Group 1 has become really interesting. India became the first team from the group to enter the semi-finals as they beat the Mitchell March-led  Australia by 24 runs on Monday. However, the other three teams in the group are not out. The points table is as follows - India (6 points, 3 games, NRR +2.017), Australia (2 points, 3 games, NRR -0.331), Afghanistan (2 points, 2 matches, NRR -0.650), Bangladesh (0 points, 2 matches, NRR -2.489).  Now, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Australia can qualify for semi-finals. Following are the scenarios:  1. Afghanistan can enter the semi-finals with a win over Bangladesh. That way they will reach 4 points and be the second team from Group 1 of Super 8 to enter last four stage.  2. Australia can enter semi-finals only if Afghanistan lose to Bangladesh with a margin of less than 61 runs (considering the first innings total is 160) or outside 13 overs. 3. Bangladesh can enter semi-finals only if they beat Afghanist

Gambhir Sets Blunt 'Kohli, Rohit 2025 Clause' For India Coach Job: Report

Gautam Gambhir has been heavily linked with the job to become the next head coach of the Indian men's cricket team. With current boss Rahul Dravid 's contract set to expire after the ongoing T20 World Cup, Gambhir was the only candidate to apply for the job, as per multiple reports. The former India opener was interviewed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) last week, where Gambhir presented some of his demands to the board. However, Navbharat Times has now reported that during his interview with the CAC, Gambhir laid down not one but five conditions to accept BCCI's proposal. Gambhir demanded that he will have full control of the cricketing operations of the team, without any interference from the board. Secondly, the two-time World Cup winner will pick his own support staff, including batting, fielding and bowling coaches. Thirdly, and most importantly, the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan could be the last opp

Watch: "Cricket Team Ko Kya Hua Hai?", Babar Azam Roasted In Pak Parliament

The Pakistan cricket team had a horrible outing in the T20 World Cup 2024 as the Babar Azam -led side crashed out of the competition in the group stage. They were beaten by United States and India in their opening two matches and although they did beat Canada and Ireland, it was too little too late for them. The unceremonious exit led to massive criticism of the Pakistan cricket team - both by fans and experts - with fingers being pointed towards captain Babar Azam. The fallout of the exit even reached the Pakistan parliament where Abdul Qadir Patel, a member of parliament, took a dig at Babar for performing horribly in the T20 World Cup with a reference to former Prime Minister Imran Khan. "Ye cricket team ko kya hua hai. Yeh America se bhi haar gaye. Yeh India se bhi haar gaye toh Babar Azam ko apne hi kisi senior cricketer se sabak lete hue haarne ke baad ek jalsa rakhe, woh usme kagaz lehraye bole dekho yeh mere khilaf saazish ho rahi hai, koi usse kuch nahi puchega. Why India Are Not Yet In T20 WC Semis Despite Win vs Bangladesh: Explained

Image
The Indian cricket team's march in the T20 World Cup 2024 continued with a big 50-run win over Bangladesh in Antigua on Saturday. The likes of Hardik Pandya , Virat Kohli , Jasprit Bumrah , Arshdeep Singh performed really well as India stayed unbeaten in the T20 World Cup 2024. However, despite the second successive win in the Super 8 stage of T20 World Cup, India are not yet in the semi-final. Here's how: India have four points in two matches (NRR +2.425). The other teams are: Australia (two points in one game, NRR + 2.471), Afghanistan (0 points from 1 match, NRR -2.350) and Bangladesh (0 points from 2 games, -2.489).  Now, if Afghanistan beat Australia in their next match, then Australia beat India and then Afghanistan win vs Bangladesh, three teams will be on four points. The NRR will then decide the top two teams in the group. Hence, India are not yet in the semi-finals. However, if Australia defeat Afghanistan, both the Aussies and India will be through to the semi-fnals

Acted On Unsecured Loans To Avert Bigger Problems: RBI Governor

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) endeavors to smell out a crisis early and act on it, Governor Shaktikanta Das said, stating that not taking any action on the unsecured lending front would have created "bigger problems". The November 2023 action to curb growth in the riskier unsecured lending has had the desired impact as the growth in such portfolios slowed down, Mr Das said addressing an international conference on financial resilience at the RBI's College of Supervisors in Mumbai. Restrictions on unsecured lending were the result of a view that there could be a potential problem in the credit market because of growth in unsecured lending, he said. The overall headline parameters were looking good, but there was "clear evidence" of dilution of underwriting standards, lack of proper appraisals, and a mentality to join the bandwagon for driving up the unsecured lending among some lenders, he added. "We thought if left unattended, these vulnerabilities ca

Dravid All But Confirms 1 Big Change In India's Playing XI vs Afghanistan

Without giving too much away, India head coach Rahul Dravid hinted at the possibility of playing wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the Caribbean leg of the T20 World Cup, starting with the Super 8 opener against Afghanistan. India did not play either Kuldeep or Yuzvendra Chahal in the USA leg of the tournament considering the pace-friendly conditions. However, the conditions are different in the Caribbean where wrist spinners have already made an impact with Adam Zampa being a case in point. India could drop a pacer and include Kuldeep in the team How tough was it to leave Kuldeep, who has been India's standout spinner over the past 12 months, out of playing eleven in USA? “It's tough to leave anyone out. I mean all the four guys that we left out in those games, to be honest, are all quality players. It's just that the conditions and what we felt was the requirement in that particular venue made us go with that particular combination where we felt that there wasn't a hug

In the midst of this, BCCI and Gambhir has been sent an important message by former Pakistan star Kamran Akmal . "Team India doesn't need any foreign coaches. They have plenty of options and talent. Brooke Shields Didn't Ditch The Red Carpet, But Heels For Matching Crocs

For Brooke Shields, comfort appears to reign supreme, be it a casual outing or a red-carpet attendance. So, at the 77th annual Tony Awards on Sunday, the veteran actress took some respite from the summer heat in a not-so-fitted vivid yellow gown . Plucked out from the shelves of designer label Monique Lhuillier, the monotone silhouette featured a small bustle element to accentuate her hips. The sequin-adorned bodice made it hard to take our eyes off the diva. The deep V-neckline extending to her midriff played the risque factor. Mesh detailing on the front doubled up the bold quotient. A small yellow bow secured at the hem of the bodice spruced up her look. But that was not all. Brooke Shields challenged the existing fashion norms in terms of footwear by slipping into an unconventional pair of yellow Crocs . Safe to say, brave and beautiful could easily be her middle name.  Also Read:  Angelina Jolie And Her Daughter Vivienne Look Terrific In Matching Teal Ensembles On The Red Carpet

"Every Tesla Car Can Be Hacked": Ex-Minister Shreds Elon Musk's EVM Comment

Former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who had offered US billionaire Elon Musk a "tutorial" on Indian Electronic Voting Machines, today doubled down on his argument, saying going by the Tesla chief's logic, "every Tesla car can be hacked". Responding to Mr Musk's claim that "everything can be hacked", Mr Chandrasekhar, who headed the Union ministry of Electronics and Information Technology during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's second tenure, said, "I think he is factually incorrect in saying that". "A calculator or a toaster cannot be hacked. Therefore, there is a limit in terms of where this paradigm of hacking can extend," he told news agency ANI. "He (Elon Musk) is factually wrong... To claim that there cannot be a secure digital product in the world is to then say that every Tesla car can be hacked," he added. Mr Musk would be right only if the machines in question are connected like phones or computer

Telangana Congress MLA's Bakrid Greeting Sparks Row, He Apologises

A ruling Congress MLA in Telangana on Monday landed in a controversy after his Bakrid greetings on social media included a graphic image of a cow, drawing sharp response from the BJP. The Congress legislator, Kumbam Anil Kumar Reddy, later apologised for the "inadvertent error", even as the post was removed from all related social media accounts. The poster was supposed to have the image of a goat and it has now been removed from social media platforms, he said. BJP MLA Raja Singh, taking exception to the image of a cow in Mr Reddy's Bakrid greetings, alleged Hindus are insulted wherever Congress forms government. While there is nothing objectionable about greeting people on the occasion of Bakrid, what message does the MLA want to convey, Raja Singh, known for his strong Hindutva views, asked. Why is Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy silent on the matter, he asked. Anil Kumar Reddy, in a video release later, said he is a 'Ram bhakt' and that he has always foll

"Best Way To End War In Gaza": Biden Pushes For Truce Deal In Eid Message

President Joe Biden used his Eid al-Adha message to Muslims to advocate a US-backed ceasefire deal in Gaza, saying Sunday it was the best way to help civilians suffering the "horrors of war between Hamas and Israel." "Too many innocent people have been killed, including thousands of children. Families have fled their homes and seen their communities destroyed. Their pain is immense," Biden said in a statement. "I strongly believe that the three-phase ceasefire proposal Israel has made to Hamas and that the UN Security Council has endorsed is the best way to end the violence in Gaza and ultimately end the war," he added. The United States has been pressing Israel and Hamas to formally accept the ceasefire deal greenlighted by Security Council members last week, which would allow an initial six-week pause to fighting. Eid al-Adha, which marks the prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son to God, saw a rare day of relative calm in Gaza after

Israel Military's Daily Pauses For Gaza Aid Delivery Pitch Irks Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized plans announced by the military on Sunday to hold daily tactical pauses in fighting along one of the main roads into Gaza to facilitate aid delivery into the Palestinian enclave. The military had announced the daily pauses from 0500 GMT until 1600 GMT in the area from the Kerem Shalom Crossing to the Salah al-Din Road and then northwards. "When the prime minister heard the reports of an 11-hour humanitarian pause in the morning, he turned to his military secretary and made it clear that this was unacceptable to him," an Israeli official said. The military clarified that normal operations would continue in Rafah, the main focus of its operation in southern Gaza, where eight soldiers were killed on Saturday. The reaction from Netanyahu underlined political tensions over the issue of aid coming into Gaza, where international organisations have warned of a growing humanitarian crisis. Cricketer-Turned-MP Yusuf Pathan Gets Notice For Encroachment In Gujarat

The BJP-ruled Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) in Gujarat has issued a notice to former India cricketer and recently elected Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP from Baharampur Yusuf Pathan for allegedly encroaching on a plot of land the civic body said belongs to it. While the notice was served to Mr Pathan on June 6, VMC's standing committee chairman Shital Mistry informed the media on Thursday after the issue was highlighted by former BJP corporator Vijay Pawar. Talking to reporters earlier in the day, Mr Pawar had alleged that though the state government had rejected VMC's proposal to sell the plot to Mr Pathan in 2012, the newly elected MP had encroached on the plot by constructing a compound wall. "I don't have any grudge against Yusuf Pathan. A plot in Tanadalja area under TP 22 is a residential plot owned by VMC. In 2012, Mr Pathan had demanded this plot from VMC because his house, which was under construction at that time, was adjacent to that plot. H
