India Voices "Great Concern" Over Situation In War-Ravaged Gaza

Underling that the conflict in Gaza is of “great concern”, India on Monday said the humanitarian crisis arising from conflicts required a sustainable solution that gives immediate relief to those most affected. Addressing the 55th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that terrorism and hostage-taking are not acceptable and hoped that the conflict does not spread within or beyond the region. India strongly condemned the terror attack by Hamas on October 7 last year. “At the same time, we must be clear that terrorism and hostage-taking are unacceptable,” he said in his address via video link from New Delhi. He said that international humanitarian law must always be respected. “It is vital that the conflict does not spread within or beyond the region,” he said, adding that the efforts must also focus on seeking a two-state solution where Palestinian people can live within Israelis. Speaking at an interactive session at the Munich Securi

Tried To Maintain Equilibrium, China's 2020 Move Changed That: S Jaishankar

India and China are rising and the two countries, in the process, are changing the world order, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday. Mr Jaishankar, citing talks between the leadership of the two countries in Mamallapuram and Wuhan, said India tried to maintain an "equilibrium" in the ties through diplomacy, but the relations took a different turn following China's military build-up along the Line of Actual Control in 2020 in violation of laid down norms. The external affairs minister, speaking at a media summit organised by the TV9 Network , described the rise of India and China as "significant" in the global geopolitical scenario. "If you were to list three or four really big things which have changed in the last 20-25 years, I think most people would agree it would be the rise of China and the rise of India," he said, replying to a question. "You can say China started it much earlier because our own politics here delayed th

"Not Freedom Of Speech": Minister On Space To Khalistani Elements Abroad

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called out the space given to extremist Khalistani elements in foreign countries and said this is not freedom of speech, but a misuse of it. He said it is not good for any country to send that kind of message for their own reputation and expressed hope that action will be taken against those who attacked Indian missions. The Minister was speaking at the event 'The Rise of the Global South' at TV9 Bharatvarsh Conclave on Monday. Speaking about the situation in Canada, Mr Jaishankar said, "We had to suspend the issue of visas in Canada because our diplomats were not safe going to work, they were repeatedly threatened, intimidated, and got very little comfort from the Canadian system at that time...which has improved since then." "We reached a stage, where, as a minister, I could not risk exposing my diplomats to the kind of violence prevalent there. That part of it has been rectified, so today our visa operations are prett

Ahmed Patel's Daughter's "Alliance Dharma" Remark As AAP Gets Bharuch Seat

Expressing disappointment after the Aam Admi Party (AAP) was allowed to contest from the Bharuch seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as a part of seat-sharing pact with Congress, Mumtaz Patel, the daughter of late veteran Congress leader Ahmed Patel on Sunday said that sometimes sacrifices have to be made in the larger interest of the country adding that she will follow the "alliance dharma". In Gujarat, the Congress has decided to contest 24 of 26 Lok Sabha seats, leaving the remaining two --Bharuch and Bhavnagar -- for the AAP. Speaking to ANI, Mumtaz Patel said, "I was disappointed but I believe that whatever decision our alliance committee has taken is in the national interest. I respect their decision. Discussions were already held in this regard. I am sad but we will accept the decision. Whatever party instructs, I will follow Alliance Dharma." "Whenever there is talk about Bharuch, the name of Ahmed Patel comes. He was the voice of Bharuch for 45

Trump Wins South Carolina Republican Primary, Defeats Nikki Haley

Donald Trump cruised to a decisive victory Saturday in the South Carolina Republican primary, blitzing rival Nikki Haley in her home state and continuing his march to the nomination and a White House rematch with Joe Biden. Trump completed a sweep of the first four major nominating contests, converting a year of blockbuster polls into a likely insurmountable lead going into the "Super Tuesday" 15-state voting bonanza in 10 days. While Haley repeatedly questioned the 77-year-old former president's mental fitness and warned another Trump presidency would bring "chaos," her efforts appeared to do little to damage his standing among Republicans. The margin of victory was not immediately clear but it was expected to be significant, with major US networks calling the race within seconds of the polls closing.  Haley, a popular governor of South Carolina in the 2010s and the only woman to have entered the Republican contest, was looking to outperform expectations in

Manipur Group Calls To End Suspension Of Ops Agreement, Days Before Review

A global alliance of Manipur's Meitei community has called for scrapping a controversial ceasefire with over two dozen Kuki-Zo insurgent groups amid the ethnic conflict between the hill-majority Kuki-Zo tribes and the valley-majority Meiteis. The Kuki-Zo insurgent groups that signed the tripartite suspension of operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre and the Manipur government in 2008 have been hiding under the SoO safety net "to covertly act against India's peace and security," the Meitei Alliance, a group whose members are Meitei civil society organisations around the world including in the UK, the US, and Europe said in a statement on Saturday. Every year, a joint monitoring group (JMG) reviews the SoO agreement and decides whether to end or renew it. The next review is on February 29. Broadly, the SoO agreement says the insurgents are to stay at designated camps and their weapons kept in locked storage, to be monitored regularly. The Manipur government in Ma

Putin Critic's Mother Shown His Body, Claims Russia Wants Secret Burial

Alexei Navalny's mother Lyudmila on Thursday accused Russian investigators of planning a "secret" funeral for her son and said she would not agree to it. "They want this to be done secretly, with no farewell. They want to bring me to the edge of a cemetery, to a fresh grave and say: here lies your son. I don't agree to this," she said in a YouTube video. There was no immediate response from Russian investigators. Navalny, 47, Russia's best known opposition politician, died suddenly in an Arctic penal colony last week. His team and family have alleged that the Kremlin murdered him, an allegation the Kremlin has angrily rejected. His mother said she had been shown his body and death certificate. Navalny's team said the death certificate stated that the opposition politician had died of natural causes. Posters Show Rahul Gandhi As Lord Krishna Ahead Of Nyay Yatra In UP

Ahead of the arrival of the Congress's ongoing 'Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra' in Kanpur, Congress leader Sandeep Shukla on Wednesday put up hoardings where Rahul Gandhi was depicted as Lord Krishna and state party chief Ajay Rai as Arjun from the epic 'Mahabharat'. The hoardings went up across the city on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters, Mr Shukla said he sees Rahul Gandhi as a modern-day incarnation of Lord Krishna. "His purpose is clear, much like when Lord Krishna, during the Dwaparyug, countered the hostility of the Kauravas towards the Pandavas. At the time, Lord Krishna appeared to spread love. Similarly, our leader Rahul Gandhi has taken it upon himself to spread the message of love and brotherhood in this Kalyug. Today, he is arriving in Kanpur to spread love and oneness everywhere. I see him as an incarnation of Lord Krishna," Mr Shukla said earlier in the day. "Honourable Ajay Rat-ji is by his side, portraying the role of Arjun, ready to tak

Private Moon Lander Enters Orbit For 1st US Lunar Touchdown In 50 Years

A moon lander built by Houston-based company Intuitive Machines reached lunar orbit on Wednesday, headed for an attempt at the first US touchdown on Earth's nearest celestial neighbour in more than 50 years, and the first ever by a private spacecraft. The six-legged Nova-C lander, dubbed Odysseus, entered a circular orbit 57 miles (92 km) above the lunar surface after firing its main rocket thruster for nearly seven minutes in an orbital insertion manoeuvre, the company said in an online statement. Assuming all goes according to plan, the robot spacecraft is expected to gradually lower its orbit over the next 24 hours and land at crater Malapert A near the moon's south pole at 5:49 p.m. EST (2249 GMT) on Thursday, carrying a suite of NASA science instruments and technology demonstrations. Odysseus was launched six days ago, on Feb. 15, atop a Falcon 9 rocket built and flown by Elon Musk's California-based company SpaceX from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canave

Two Men Charged With Murder Over Kansas City Super Bowl Parade Shooting

Two men have been charged with murder over the shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade which left one person dead and 22 wounded, officials said Tuesday. Dominic Miller and Lyndell Mays, both local residents, were charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker told reporters. Peters Baker said Mays got into a verbal altercation with other individuals at the parade that "very quickly escalated." She said Miller allegedly fired the shots that killed a local DJ, Lisa Lopez-Galvan. Peters Baker said both men were being held on $1 million bond and face a potential sentence of life in prison on the murder charges. The prosecutor said the arrests of Miller and Mays were in addition to those of two juveniles whose arrests were announced last week. The pair, who were not identified because of their ages, are facing gun-related charges and are accused of resisting arrest. The shootin

"Like Doomsday": Gazans Describe Terrifying Evacuation From Hospital

Gunfire echoed around Palestinian medics, patients and displaced people during what they described as a terrifying and chaotic night evacuation from Gaza's Nasser Hospital after Israeli forces rushed in the hospital. Survivors of last week's assault on the second-biggest hospital in Gaza said they then faced a treacherous walk to safety through the dark, passing corpses along the way. One doctor said a male nurse was detained at an Israeli checkpoint, stripped naked and taken away screaming. "Smoke was everywhere, it was like doomsday, people running everywhere," said Doctor Ahmed al-Mughraby, head of the plastic surgery department, who fled with his wife and children. Mughraby, who has found refuge with his family in a shelter near another hospital where he now works, said Israeli forces had ordered everyone to evacuate except patients unable to walk and medics looking after them. Details of the military assault on Nasser Hospital have been gradually emerging as

Inflation Expectations In India May Stabilise, Edge Down Going Ahead: RBI

Inflation expectations in India may stabilise and edge down going ahead but renewed pressures from cereals and proteins cannot be ruled out, the Reserve Bank of India said in its February bulletin published on Tuesday. India's retail inflation eased to a three-month low of 5.1% in January, from 5.69% in December and 5.55% in November. Overall inflation developments are turning favourable, providing a stable environment for corporates to plan expansion strategies in anticipation of a pick-up in demand, the RBI wrote in its regular article titled 'State of the Economy'. "Core inflation is at its lowest since October 2019 and non-food wholesale price inflation remains in deflation. This should augur well for the input cost outlook and selling prices of manufacturing firms." The RBI said evolving conditions are turning favourable on the agriculture front as well for the next financial year. The likelihood of the global economy exhibiting stronger-than-expected gr

"Why Would I Meet PM At Night?" Farooq Abdullah On GN Azad's Claim

National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah has reacted sharply to Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) President Ghulam Nabi Azad's claims that he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah 'secretly' at night. Mr Abdullah said that he would meet the Prime Minister or the Home Minister during the day if he had to and asked why Mr Azad was "defaming" him. "If I have to meet PM Modi or Union Home Minister Amit Shah, I will meet them during the day, why should I meet them at night? What is the reason that he has thought of defaming Farooq Abdullah? When no one wanted to give him a Rajya Sabha seat, I was the one who gave him a Rajya Sabha seat, but today he is saying all this," the National Conference chief said. "They want to malign my image and drag my name into every matter. He should reveal the names of his agents who are sitting at the residence of the PM and Union Home Minister. Sharad Pawar Petition Against Poll Body's 'Real NCP' Order In Court Today

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday a plea of Sharad Pawar challenging an Election Commission order recognising the Ajit Pawar-led faction as the real Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta and KV Viswanathan is likely to hear Sharad Pawar's plea. On February 16, the top court had agreed to urgently list the plea after Sharad Pawar stated that a whip may be issued by the faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The veteran leader had sought an urgent hearing of his plea in the wake of twin blows suffered by the group led by him and the consequential fear of facing action for possible violations of whip by his MLAs. Sharad Pawar had sought urgent hearing in view of the February 15 order of Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar. Mr Narwekar held that the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar was the real NCP and that the anti-defection provisions in the Constitution cannot be used to stifle internal dissent

"Reminds Me Of A Young Tendulkar": Shastri's Massive Praise For India Star

Former India head coach and ex-international player Ravi Shastri was all praise for young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal following his terrific performance against Engalnd during the third Test in Rajkot. Jaiswal, who failed with a run-a-ball 10 in India's first innings, scored big in his next opportunity. He crafted a beautiful 104-run knock before an injury forced him to retire hurt mid-way. As soon as Jaiswal raced to his third Test century on Saturday, Shastri compared his skills to that of cricket great Sachin Tendulkar. "Impressed with the way (Yashasvi) Jaiswal has stepped up today. Not just with the bat, but his performance on the field too. I think going forward, he could be one of Rohit's go-to part-time options. The ball would be in his hands - whether it's leg-spin, off-spin or medium-pace. Jaiswal reminds me of a young Tendulkar. Busy all the time," said Shastri during commentary after Jaiswal completed his ton as quoted by Hindustan Times. "Thi

Some Took Away Party, Some Took Away Symbol: Sharad Pawar's Dig At Nephew

Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said he was not worried about losing the NCP name and symbol but asserted people did not approve of those who chose to go on a different path, a reference to the rebellion by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Maharashtra assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar on Thursday held that the Ajit Pawar-led group was the real Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) when two factions emerged in July 2023. Ajit Pawar and eight MLAs joined the Eknath Shinde government on July 2 last year, leading to a split in the Sharad Pawar-founded NCP. Addressing a public meeting in Satara in western Maharashtra, Sharad Pawar said power comes and goes but ideology, policies and the thought to take the country forward are permanent. "But some of our colleagues deviated from this path. Some took away the party, some took away the symbol. I never worry about all this. Some people chose to go on a different path by forsaking ideolog

BJP Defends Electoral Bonds, Says Respects Supreme Court Verdict

The BJP on Thursday defended the electoral bonds scheme, struck down as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, saying it had a laudable objective of bringing transparency in poll funding. BJP leader and former law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, however, added that his party respects the Supreme Court verdict. Noting that the verdict has been delivered by a Constitution bench of the top court, he said the judgment runs into hundreds of pages and requires a comprehensive study before a structured reply is given by the party. He told reporters that the government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made efforts to reform election funding and the introduction of electoral bonds was a part of such measures. Mr Prasad said the voters' list now carries photographs of electorates while electronic voting machines are being used in large numbers, curbing the menace of booth-capturing. "This (bonds) was also a part of similar sincere efforts to make elections transparent. The

Lawyers' Services Can't Be Under Consumer Law: Bar Associations To Court

The Supreme Court was told on Thursday that lawyers or legal practitioners cannot solicit or advertise their work unlike doctors and hospitals, who can publish advertisements, and hence, their services cannot be brought under the Consumer Protection Act. Differentiating between the services rendered by a lawyer and a doctor, senior advocate Narendra Hooda, appearing for bar bodies and other individuals, told a bench of justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal that first and foremost, the duty of a lawyer is towards the court to assist it in a settlement of law and not his client. The bar bodies, such as Bar Council of India, Delhi High Court Bar Association and Bar of Indian Lawyers, and other individuals in a batch of petitions have challenged a 2007 verdict of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC), which has ruled that advocates and their services come under the purview of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. Users Complain About Fake Domino's Pizza Outlets On Swiggy, Company Reacts

Several social media users have complained that a simple search for "Domino's" on the food delivery application Swiggy shows a number of results, all of which misspell the name of the international pizza brand. A user, Ravi Handa, took to X and highlighted the problem. In the screenshot shared by him, one can notice several Domino's pizza outlets near his address in Kolkata, however, all of them had different spellings to trick the customer. One restaurant was named "Domino Pizza" while another is called "Domino'ss Pizza". "Hey @Swiggy This is clearly a fraud. Only one of these is genuine. Why are you letting this happen? Why isn't @dominos objecting to blatant violation of trademark," he wrote on the microblogging platform alongside the screenshot. In a follow-up post, Mr Handa said, "This isn't just a joke. Someone close to me actually fell for it. They realised it only after they got the delivery and saw the box."

AAP Announces Goa, Gujarat Candidates, Sends A Message To Congress

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stepped up pressure on its INDIA bloc partner Congress on Tuesday, announcing candidates from South Goa and two seats in Gujarat for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and complaining over delayed seat-sharing negotiations. In a further attempt to corner the Congress, the AAP offered just one of the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi to the grand old party while making its intentions clear that it would like to contest from the remaining six seats. At a press conference following a Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting of the party, AAP general secretary (organisation) Sandeep Pathak declared Venzy Viegas as the party candidate from South Goa and Chaitar Vasva and Umeshbhai Makwana from the Bharuch and Bhavnagar seats in Gujarat. 1 Killed, 5 Injured In Shooting At New York City Subway Station: Report

New York City police said on Monday that multiple people were shot at a subway station in the Bronx, with local media reporting as many as six people hit by bullets. The local ABC TV affiliate citing unnamed police sources reported one person had died from their injuries, and five other people sustained non-life threatening wounds. A spokeswoman for the New York Police Department said they did not yet have details on exactly how many people were shot, nor the condition of any of the victims. It was not yet known if the shooter was in custody. The most recent data shows crime remains rare on New York's subway system: about 3.8 million trips are taken on the system on an average weekday, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported 570 felony assaults in all of 2023. Shootings are especially uncommon: in 2022, when a man with a handgun injured 10 people on a train passing through Brooklyn, it was the first mass shooting attack on the subway system since 1984. 6-Hour-Long Centre And Farmers' Meet Ends, Cops Prep To Face 'Delhi Chalo'

Farmers leaders who met Union ministers in Chandigarh for six hours alleged the government was not sincere about the talks, even as tractor-trolleys set out from different parts of Punjab to go to Delhi. In the national capital, massive deployment of police and paramilitary personnel, besides multi-layered barricading have been made to seal the city at Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur. "The talks did not lead to any result. We will start our march to Delhi at 10 am. We will, however, discuss the proposals given by the government in our forum. The government is clearly at fault here," a farmer leader told reporters after the meeting ended. They discussed repealing the Electricity Act, 2020, and compensation for farmers who were killed in the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri. An agreement was reached between the government and the farmer groups to withdraw the cases filed against them during the year-long protest against the now-scrapped controversial farm laws. However, the meeting e
